We are first time users and wanted to take advantage the 1st time user discount. We started to sign up, but then realized that we had not clicked on the link to get our discount. We cancelled, but when we went back in to sign up through the discount link, it told us our phone and email was already used! We only have the one mobile phone that we use while traveling. Could you clear us out or send us a way to get our discount. We did not complete either sign up at this point. Anonymous posted on Nov 20, 2019 ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ And as far as whether Uber drivers are actually employees, they’re not. The Department of Labor is currently reviewing its regulations for employees in light of the new ruling. If the DOL rules that drivers are independent contractors, they will be allowed to work more hours, meaning that Uber drivers would no longer have to be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. According to Uber’s own rules, it is illegal for Uber to have drivers who are not paid by the minute and require them to drive the whole time. It is illegal to use a GPS-tracking device to track employees’ every move, and it’s illegal to charge Uber employees for a smartphone. For this reason, Uber’s drivers in New York are not employees. The law states: "The term ’employer’ includes an individual or a partnership of individuals acting within the scope of their employment or agency." MikeM posted on Nov 20, 2019 ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ Uber has the ability to create and promote new technologies, but the company also has to follow the regulations that protect users and the public. Uber’s self-driving program has already been in place for years, but it wasn’t until the California DMV issued its own guidelines on self-driving cars that Uber began to push the program. This program has also been controversial; the company has been criticized for being slow to hire drivers for the program, as well as for failing to keep drivers fully trained, and for not reporting serious accidents to police. Uber’s most recent safety update, launched in July, was a huge step forward, with a new dashboard that displayed data on how many people had been in accidents and had been involved in reported accidents. The app also now has crash and injury warnings that appear on-screen when the app thinks someone is about to be involved in an accident. Mark posted on Nov 29, 2019 ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ Many people will try to get a cab in New York City, even without a license and operating permission. If the situation is so dire, it would seem that the Taxi and Limousine Commission would provide a free taxi for anyone in need of transport. The TLC in New York has partnered with Transfer1, a smartphone app that lets you place a ticket on a credit card, save the information, and the next time you need a taxi, you can reach for your phone and get a ride to your destination. That’s certainly very convenient. Marco posted on Nov 29, 2019 ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ New York taxi drivers are expected to rebel against Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s highly restrictive new order restricting the size of cabs. Last week, the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission received seven initial bids from privately held cabs that will be required to sell cabs to as few as four owners at a time, according to the New York Daily News. The taxis will be required to sell their vehicles within seven days. Martin posted on Dec 9, 2019 ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ Uber rates in New York City have skyrocketed; 80% of them are behind the wheel, and 40% do the job regularly. Here’s why. You are so used to being on a fixed salary. The nature of the new economy brings up challenges. Uber and Lyft should offer higher rates in wealthier areas where passengers are accustomed to being well-off. You’re paying $10 to $12 an hour and about the same in profits. I think that’s likely to accelerate the adoption and roll-out of autonomous vehicles. As drivers abandon high-paying jobs to take extra employment gigs, truckers and taxi drivers will find themselves competing. Martin posted on Dec 9, 2019 ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ Taxi prices in New York City have doubled in the last three years, increasing by 47%. Not only are cab drivers forced to cover over-the-limit meter prices in the city, they also have to contend with city rules for how much money they must take home per hour. "If I’m late to the job, I can lose my job," said one of the drivers to me. While taxicabs tend to be based on location, a...
